MACCCAAAABBBBIIAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!
I was looking through the blog and all of the comments that people have been leaving. It occurred to me that many of the memories that people have posted have to do with one of Eisner’s most beloved events, MACCABIAH. Those few days at the end of the summer have made millions of memories; apache relays, sports games, song, cheer, dance, and art showcases. Everyone has taken their own memories from particular events or happenings during Maccabiah, but there is one thing that all individuals from all four teams remember from each year’s Maccabiah, the “Break.” Check out a video of the break from last year..
Hundreds of campers year after year wait anxiously in those last few days of second session for the four colors to be miraculously splayed throughout camp. The word “madness” cannot even begin to describe the aura and energy of the campers during the Maccabiah break. The campers all ask the same question year after year, “How will they break it this year?” Sometimes it seems that everything has been done. Will parachutes fall from helicopters with the four different iconic colors blue, red, green, and gold? What about fireworks shows or fake emergency evacuations? We’ve seen it all…well that’s at least what we say every year until something new and crazy happens. It’s high time that we collect these “breaks” in this unofficial history book. This is where you come in. Tell us what the break was from your year (and even what the fake break was)! What crazy things do you remember? Truthfully I don’t even know how far Maccabiah goes back, maybe someone can answer that…

1973-(White) Shomrim plans the break for Maccabiah and has large plans to contract a local pilot to drop different colored volleyballs with parachutes over the crowd of campers. Shomrim reverts to their Plan B when overcast skies make it hard for to execute the initial plan. Instead Shomrim runs through the bunks in the morning screaming “Maccabiah.” Maccabiah 1973 ended with the dramatic drinking of the Fribbles. Shomrim counselors “Les and Linda” had added up the points and had concocted a novel way to announce the winner. As the entire camp watched, one at a time the 33 members of Shomrim came up and were handed a Fribble. As they sipped it through the straw it came up either blue or white, and campers announced the color to the crowd. One half of the dining hall would scream and a point would be added to the total. It came down to the last Fribble, and Sue (Yael) Shuman went up to get it. Sue Schuman pulled the drink through the straw, but the camp couldn’t tell what color it was. She tried to yell it out, but no one could understand it at first. She finally spit out “White!”, and the white half of the dining hall erupted.- Contributed by Jim Levi

1993-The Ron Dagan concert brought all of Eisner together in the New Facility. The final chorus of “Jailhouse Rock” concluded with “Maccabiah”–Olimers ran in to the Newf and some were posted on a platform above the stage, revealed when a sheet dropped at the chant of “Maccabiah.”-Contributed by Saul Wiener
1994-Olim runs through all of the Eisner bunks screaming “Maccabiah!!!!” to wake up all of the campers at 6 AM. Chaos Ensues.-Contributed by Melanie Wiener.
1995 (Blue)-
1996 (Gold)- Unit specific breaks. Bonim plays Simon Sez in the Chadar Ochel and for the final question, Simon said “Maccabiah!!!” as Olimers ran out of the Kitchen. Ofarim played “how well do you know your counselor” which was promptly interrupted by Olimers. Probably the coolest, most classic part of the break happened for Tzofim. While they were watching Terminator 2, the movie was spliced in with a message from Olim that told them, “that’s right, it’s Maccabiah.” Olimers ran through the screen and led everyone to the Quad.
1997-
1998-There’s a fireworks show over the large soccer field with the four colors of Maccabiah.- Contributed by Melanie Wiener.
1999 (Gold)-Olimers (and adventure staff) repelled with ropes and harnesses off the sides of the New Facility (which was taken down at the end of the summer) after a unit play and break into the building.-Contributed by Melanie Weiner and Bevin Nicastro
2000 (Green)-Olimers hide in the bushes and as a helicopter lands on the Quad, the Olimers run out from everywhere screaming, “Maccabiah!”- Contributed by Melanie Wiener
2001 (Red)- As camp anticipated an evening break after the Bonim show, they have to wait until the next morning when as staff goes into the serving line in the new Chadar, Olim runs out of the outdoor as a big surprise. Teams rolls were called and then split into team breakfasts.
2002-
2003- Unit evening programs were interupted by face-painted Djembe players who appeared out of nowhere. Camp all ran to the old chadar where a Blue Man Group exhibition and blue light powered balloon drop happened.
2004 (Red)-
2005 (Green)-Indiana Jones is the theme for this Maccabiah! An “arc” is built to the exact dimensions as stated in the Torah. All units are shown a movie clip from “Raiders of the Lost Arc” on large butcher paper screens throughout different locations on camp. Olimers run through the back of the screens and bring all of the campers to the lake for a fireworks and fire twirler show where the different color tablets are brought out of the arc.
2006 (Red)- Fraggle Rock is the 2006 Maccabiah theme. Eisner brings “Camplified” concert series to camp. Olim 2006 paints themselves in the four different colors and rush into the rock concert as confetti cannons blast.

It is so funny that I cannot remember every single Maccabiah break that I was a part of. I don’t even remember the Maccabiah break from when I was in Olim in 1995. I do remember the following:
1994 – Olimers ran through the bunks at 6am waking up all the campers.
1998 – Fireworks show over the soccer field.
2000 – Olimers hide in the bushes and as a helicopter lands on the Quad, the Olimers run out from everywhere screaming, “Maccabiah!”

with all this talk about Macabbiah, I can’t believe there has been no talk of Haggigah–also knowns as the year without Maccabiah. 1980? 1981? Someone else has to remember chanting Ha Gi Gah is Bor-Ing to the tune of We Will Rock You?

Melanie’s close…the rapelling was done by the adventure staff (I remember because I rapelled into the newf) and I think that may have been ‘98, but it also could’ve been ‘99…

The repelling from the roof was in 1999. I wasn’t there but I believe wasn’t that the fake break but the real one was bad so in the video from that year they show that one…but i was in Israel.
2000-it broke after the Tzofim/Chaverim show Newsies
2002 -Star Wars (I don’t remember details)

Since I started camp in 1964 at the age of 9, I’m not sure when I moved to the Hill, except I know I was a waitress, or younger.
Anyway, one year on the Hill, Maccabiah was broken by someone (can’t remember who) rode a horse almost entirely into the bunk. That was my most memorable. Does anyone else from back then remember that?
I remember so much about Maccabiah’s: scavenger hunts that lasted 2 days and included collecting cigarette butts, my drawing a huge Tony the Tiger as part of a mural in the dining room, of course singing and skits, races, singing the loudest contests, and I’m sure I’ll think of more!

I remember writing and singing creative (ahem) songs to popular tunes. Also camp-wide relay races that included singing the alphabet backwards, eating crackers and whistling, paddling a canoe across the lake with your hands..what else?
And does anyone remember white rolls with blue (ugh) cream cheese?

This gets long, so bear with me.
We had huge plans for our break in 1973. We were the first Shomrim, and we had been given the responsibility to organize and run Maccabiah. We picked our break night, and had arranged for the after-dinner singing that night to happen on the grass outside out of the dining hall. We had talked to someone who knew a local pilot. He was going to fly his small plane over the crowd and release a volleyball painted blue and white (this was the last year of the two-team Maccabiah) with a small parachute attached, and it would float down as we announced the beginning of the games. I couldn’t wait for it to happen: I was the White Team general (with Lisa Kohn) and I loved Maccabiah.
Why didn’t it happen? I’m not sure any more: I remember overcast skies and threatening weather, but it might’ve been called off earlier. So we went to Plan B and woke up the camp early the next morning screaming “MACCABIAH!” It was chaos, and not nearly as cool as the way the winner was announced a couple days later.
Maccabiah 1973 ended with the dramatic drinking of the Fribbles. I’ll never forget it. Our counselors, Les and Linda, had added up the points and had concocted a novel way to announce the winner. As the entire camp watched, one at a time the 33 (?) members of our Shomrim came up and was handed a Fribble. As you sipped it through the straw it came up either blue or white, and you announced the color to the crowd. One half of the dining hall would scream and a point would be added to the total. It came down to the last Fribble, and Sue (Yael) Shuman went up to get it.
I can’t believe I remember this so clearly.
When she pulled the drink through the straw, we couldn’t tell what color it was. She tried to yell it out, but no one could understand it at first. She finally spit out “White!”, and our half of the dining hall erupted. I remember hugging more people in the next two minutes than I had in my life to that point. We had won.
I can’t wait to walk back into camp next week and see you all. I’m anticipating a lot of hugging, tears, and maybe a Fribble. Vanilla, of course.

1985 – It was kind of uneventful after several “FAKE BRAKES” earlier that week… but, during a dinner in the dining room on a Saturday night, a birthday cake was wheeled out for me (Roo, and a couple other people who shared the same birth date as me, August 18). Several Olim campers (including Michael Bank and the youngest Hayden boy) began a food fight throwing pieces of the sheet cake around, and then all of the Olimers came out from the kitchen area screaming “MACHABBIAH!!!”.

So lots of people remember the breaks, but here’s a trivia question. What year and why did Maccabbia end early???

Hmm… good question. Heck, I couldn’t even remember how MY unit broke Maccabiah until i read this blog.

Not sure of the answer to Steve’s question but I have one memory of Maccabbia breaking by Buzzy riding his motorcycle through the dining hall. Not sure of the year but it was probably in the mid 70’s.

Could some of the younger alumni, especially late 70’s, especially 80’s and 90’s, tell us oldies what some of the newer terms mean, such as:
Shomrim, Machon Leadership Program, Difference between Chalutzim and Olim (1980), what is the Avodah program as alternative (1991 timeline), “Mitzvah Max rules camp as Limud Character”(1992 timeline), and anything else we may not have known?
Thanks!

I’m guessing the year was 1968 that the camp closed early. I know I was sick & in the infirmary for 5-6 days. I remember food being brought to me from the kitchen in stackable aluminum pots, friends saying hello as they passed the window on their way to the lake & reading Rosemary’s Baby. What a book for a 13 year old!
I remember the blue cream cheese which broke Maccabbia, but not the year. It was gross!
Just 3 more days until camp!!! People are soooo excited. Our concerns are still as they were when we were 15—-what to wear (WHITE), how much to pack, which shoes, will my hair frizz. And a few new ones—get a touch-up, get a pedicure, will there be enough bathrooms & where will they be located.
I find it amazing that, after 35+ years (OY), talking to long lost camp friends is, as if we were never apart. Sharing great memories & laughing, laughing, laughing just adds to the excitement of this weekend. Can’t wait to see everyone!!!

Hi Debbie,
Not to date myself, but I think can answer some of your terminology questions. Shomrim was the unit that immediately followed the Chalutzim year (generally your 15th summer) spent up on the Hill (known back then as Chalutzim Hill). The Shomrim (16 year olds) served as waiters for the camp. Then came Machon. The Machon was a work unit that split the summer with one month of being a CIT in a bunk, and the other month spent in servitude (oops! I meant service). I spent a month dishwashing in the hot kitchen for almost 700 people, but it was one of the best months of my 12 years at Eisner.
Olim came along after they fazed out Chalutzim and Shomrim. I don’t know when they ended Machon, but my Machon workers were f’excellent. LONG LIVE D.R.A.s!!!

Thanks, Sue. It was simpler when I was there. We did the same kind of jobs, though, and waitressing was one of the best summers I had, although totally exhausting. We were no sooner done cleaning up breakfast, when we had to get ready for lunch and then dinner. I honestly don’t know why it was fun, but it was.
OK what’s a D.R.A. or did I miss something?
And, Lisa, I’ve been working on the bathroom blueprint for the camp since we spoke this a.m. !

During the 1997 break, they held camp outside of the Chadar right after the meal and had skydivers with different color streamers land on the soccer field.

What about Apache–that was the camp-wide relay. Whoever won Apache (blue team or white team) was assumed to win Maccabiah. Remember Zimriah and Dahlia? Zimriah was the Fight Song, Alma Mater and “sing.” Dahlia was two dances — one that existed and one original. I do remember the rolls stuffed with blue cream cheese but I think that was a fake break.
P.S. Hi Jim!
